I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40. I am a wife and the mother of 3 children 12 and younger. I decided to have a bi-lateral mastectomy and 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Komen has helped in our journey in so many ways. I have participated in quite a few studies that would not be possible if not for Komen MD. Last year, my daughter and I decided to organize a fund raiser for Komen MD and we started the Fight Like A Girl! Craft and Vendor Day. We hosted over 40 vendors and had more than 800 people come to shop. We raised over $3000.00 for Komen MD and increased many people's awareness of this disease. While organizing the event, which was held in October 2008, I was able to see how busy the office was at our MD Affiliate. I then volunteered some time to answer phones during the crazy weeks before our Race for the Cure. I also decided that I need to give back even more and became a spokesperson for Komen MD. I have enjoyed the events I have been able to do.
I have participated in 2 Race for The Cure events in Maryland. These days are so inspirational and overwhelming. Thank you for bringing together so many people that care!
Thank you for all that you do to end this disease and to increase awareness. I truly believe early detection is the key to survival which is certainly the case in my survival! Thank you for the support that you have provided for me.
